Strategic Focus of EAK The Alliance has four areas of focus that it seeks to pursue over the period 2006 to 2010. These are: Strengthening Governance and stewardship of the Alliance

  1. Membership Mobilization and Capacity Building
  2. Support to Membership on Mission and Evangelism
  3. Support to Membership on Advocacy

Strengthening Governance and stewardship of the Alliance

The Alliance continuously strengthens its governance and management structure in line with the increasing demands and services for its services and support coordinated through a secretariat based in Nairobi. Key to this is the appointment of a General Secretary who is also the Chief Executive Officer and the establishment of an organization structure that is adequately resourced.

Membership Mobilization and Capacity Building

The strength of the Alliance lies in its members and the strong countrywide infrastructure and network, though this has not been adequately harnessed to provide a strong collective voice. It is acknowledged that a large number of evangelical churches are characterized by poor leadership, lack appropriate governance and management systems and poor human and financial resource base. Most of the member churches lack capacity to engage in social development. The Alliance has embarked on a membership recruitment process and will strengthen its networks by establishing regional committees. The Alliance will further work with its members towards improved governance and management systems.

Support to Membership on Mission and Evangelism

Mission and evangelism is the primary calling of evangelical churches. Even though the population of Kenya is considered to be over 80% Christian, this has not impacted the country’s political and

social-economic process. Studies have shown that many parts of the country particularly the marginalized areas have not been evangelized. The efforts in mission and evangelism should acknowledge the social set up of the Kenyan people. These include the rural-urban divide; children, youth and adults; men and women; the marginalized groups (commercial sex workers, people with disabilities). The impact of the Gospel should reflect in the day-today lives of people and shape the destiny of the country. The Alliance recognizes the need to actively support its members’ initiatives in mission and evangelism by;

  • Encouraging member churches to collaborate for more effective national missionary work
  • Collaborate with other agencies for support in training particularly of missionaries and evangelists to un-reached people groups
  • Facilitate and support churches undertaking missionary work in hostile areas
  • Facilitate linkages for international missionary work with other evangelical associations

Support to Membership on Advocacy

The Alliance was actively involved in the constitutional review process since 2002 with the clamor for a new constitution the Alliance facilitated consensus building and civic education activities nationwide. It has also been involved in advocacy against corruption, the need to create an enabling legislative environment for the control of drug and substance abuse, and formulation of the Education policy.

PROGRAMS UNDER IMPLEMENTATION

  • EAK /UNITED NATIONS MILLENNIUM CAMPAIGN (UNMC)
  • EAK in collaboration with the United Nations Millennium Campaign Co-coordinator’s office has established the Micah Challenge Campaign in Kenya. Micah Challenge under the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) aims to launch the Micah Challenge Campaign Kenya through engagement with the local church, civil society and government in advocacy for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MGD’s)

    Micah Challenge has two main purposes:

    1. Inward Reflection: to prayerfully encourage Christians to walk humbly with God and seek His heart for people in poverty.
    2. Outward Action: to inspire and equip Christians to do justice and love kindness by being prophetic voices to our government and community on behalf of the poor and oppressed.

    To this end an envisioning workshop was held bringing together 25 key bishops and leaders of Christian development agencies with an aim of developing a strategy for the roll-out of the Micah Challenge Campaign.

  • EAK / NACADA

    NACADA is the National Agency responsible for disseminating information on Drug and Substance Abuse in Kenya. It has identified EAK as an invaluable asset in this aspect. To this end NACADA has;
    1. 1.Engaged with EAK to sensitize the national leadership on the Drug and Substance Abuse.

      2.Trained and commissioned 40 church leaders form different denominations during 3 annual workshops.

    EAK continues working with the trained churches in the grass-root sensitization of Drugs, their effects on the human body and society. EAK is further to this lobbying with relevant government organs for formulation and enforcement of legislature.

  • EAK / KENYA ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMISSION (KACC)

    Today corruption continues to pose one of the greatest challenges in Kenya. It undermines good governance and distorts public policy leading to misallocation of resources. Corruption has contributed slow economic growth as well as frustrated both local and international investors. On the other hand corruption had created national insecurity, and poverty. EAK is working closely with KACC to fight corruption within the member churches through training on accountability and integrity. The development of biblical message outlines for pastors to preach to their

    congregations to fight corruption in their respective communities.

  • EAK/ WORLD VISION KENYA
  • World Vision Kenya is a Christian International Agency. It exists to alleviate the suffering of the poor and more specifically children. EAK in collaboration with some of the World Vision Kenya Area Development Progrmmes (ADP’s) has been sensitizing the church on three main areas. These are;

    1. Establishment of thematic prayer chains nationwide.
    2. Spiritual nurture to ‘Children in Program’ - CIP at community level in conjunction with the local churches.
    3. Training of church leaders in HIV and AIDS through the ‘Channels of Hope’ initiative. So far five denominations and staff have received a comprehensive training and plans are underway to enhance this through the respective denominations.
  • EAK / TEARFUND UK
  • EAK in collaboration with Tearfund UK is seeking to roll out an electorate empowerment program. This is to prepare the electorate to develop criteria for leaders of integrity at their respective locations who have a pro-poor agenda. This will preferably extend post elections to empower the electorate hold their leaders accountable for good governance and sustainable development programs.

  • EAK/ CHRISTAIN PARTNERSHIP FOR HIV & AIDS IN KENYA (CPAK)

    EAK in partnership with six other Tearfund UK partners in Kenya has formed a consortium to enhance their individual responses to the pandemic. The joint strategy will build on the strengths and lessons learnt by the individual partners and eliminate duplication/overlap of efforts within the members.

    The consortium will provide a more viable forum for the partners to lobby for resources and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of partners’ initiatives.

    EAK recognizes the need to participate in a system enablingit provide a consolidated and comprehensive response to HIV & AIDS.
